changes the mode (permissions) of each

according to

which may be an octal number or a symbolic change to the existing mode.

can be numerically formed as the

of the following octal values (a leading

is ignored):

read by owner

execute (search in directory) by owner

read, write, execute (search) by group

part is a combination of the letters

(for user's permissions),

(group) and

(other).
The letter

to the file's mode,

to take away

absolutely (all other bits being reset).
